On April 6, 1994, an airplane carrying the president of Rwanda Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira, who were both returning from Dares Salam, Tanzania, from a one-day regional summit of heads of state, was shot down on its descent into Kigali, Rwanda, by unknown assailants. Everyone aboard including the two president were killed. Shortly after this, nature woke history to record the quickest killing spree the world has ever seen. In fact, before the rest of the world could know what the matter was, close to a million Rwandans were slaughtered and their body disposed of with reckless abandon in mass graves in a carefully organized program of genocide during the hundred-day period from April 7, to mid-July, 1994. If you think Hitler and his Nazi killers were too fast on the trigger, then you know nothing about the Rwandan genocide. When the Hutu majority ethnic group started slaughtering the Tutsi minority tribe in the East African country of Rwanda, can you believe that the Hutus were not only slaughtering their life-long Tutsi neighbors but also slaughtering their Tutsi wife and half-Tutsi children as well? I want you to understand that the majority of Hutus who took part in this infamous genocide didn’t partake in it because they were witches or wizards or because they enjoy to slaughter people. Remember, no father can stand another man hitting his children, far less, to slaughter them. Most of these Hutu men and women were once decent people who lived peacefully with their life-long Tutsi neighbors. Many of them were considered kind hearted. Many of them were considered kind hearted by their Tutsi friends, coworkers, and neighbors before the war. In short, it was said that there were revered pastors, renowned doctors, and priests who took part in the infamous genocide. What then turns them to monsters overnight? I know this is the question on your mind right now, isn’t it? Well, in case you don’t know, the same thi 1. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Beretta. This book explores the question of whether peacekeeping commanders can be held accountable for a failure to protect the civilian population in the mission area. This requires an assessment of whether peacekeeping commanders have an obligation to act against such serious crimes being committed under domestic and international law. The work uses the cases of the Dutch and Belgian peacekeeping commanders in Srebrenica and Kigali as examples, but it also places the analysis into the context of contemporary peacekeeping operations. It unfolds two main arguments. First, it provides a critical note to the contextual interpretation given to international law in relation to peacekeeping. It is argued that establishing a specific paradigm for peacekeeping operations with clear rules of interpretation and benchmark criteria would benefit peacekeeping and international law by making the contextual interpretation of international law redundant. Second, it is held that alternative options to the existing forms of criminal responsibility for military commanders should be considered, possibly focusing more clearly on failing to fulfil a norm of protection that is specific to peacekeeping and distinct from protective obligations under international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

2018 winner of the Hilary Weston Writers´ Trust Non-Fiction Prize2018 winner of The Quebec Writers´ Federation Literary Award - Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-FictionA stunning work of investigative reporting by a Canadian journalist who has risked her own life to bring us a deeply disturbing history of the Rwandan genocide that takes the true measure of Rwandan head of state Paul Kagame.Through unparalleled interviews with RPF defectors, former soldiers, and atrocity survivors, supported by documents leaked from a UN court, Judi Rever brings us the complete history of the Rwandan genocide. Considered by the international community to be the saviors who ended the Hutu slaughter of innocent Tutsis, Kagame and his rebel forces were also killing, in quiet and in the dark, as ruthlessly as the Hutu genocidaire were killing in daylight. The reason why the larger world community hasn´t recognized this truth? Kagame and his top commanders effectively covered their tracks and, post-genocide, rallied world guilt and played the heroes in order to attract funds to rebuild Rwanda and to maintain and extend the Tutsi sphere of influence in the region.Judi Rever, who has followed the story since 1997, has marshaled irrefutable evidence to show that Kagame´s own troops shot down the presidential plane on April 6, 1994 - the act that put the match to the genocidal flame. She proves, without a shadow of doubt, that as Kagame and his forces slowly advanced on the capital of Kigali, they were ethnically cleansing the country of Hutu men, women, and children in order that returning Tutsi settlers, displaced since the early ´60s, would have homes and land. This audiobook is heartbreaking, chilling, and necessary. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Justine Eyre. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/prhc/000642/bk_prhc_000642_sample.mp3.
